Camp Amigo 2025: A Week of Healing, Adventure, and Unforgettable Memories

Each summer, something extraordinary happens at Camp Amigo,  and 2025 was no exception! Held at Camp Anderson in Old Town, Florida, this year’s burn survivor summer camp brought together children who have endured life-changing injuries for a week of laughter, connection, and pure joy.

For one powerful week, these brave young burn survivors were free to simply be kids — to explore, make friends, and build confidence surrounded by people who truly understand their journey.

A Week of Adventure and Encouragement

The days were packed with fun, thanks to a thoughtful schedule full of exciting camp activities. From archery and pool time to river fun and taking a leap off the famous blob, the adventure never stopped. But what made the week even more meaningful were the special guests who showed up to encourage and support our campers.

  • The Dixie County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Dixie County Fire, and Commissioner Diane Williams-Cox spent time with our campers, showing them the strength of community and service.

  • The ShandsCair medical helicopter made a surprise landing at camp — a moment the kids (and counselors) will never forget as their faces lit up in amazement.

  • The Forestry Department brought in heavy equipment for the kids to explore, and Dixie County Emergency Services generously loaned us their Kubota cart, making transportation around camp smoother than ever.

  • The Knights of Pythias showed up in a big way, donating $2,000 to support our mission — an incredible example of community generosity in action.

Field Trip to Fanning Springs: Firefighters, Friendship, and Fresh Air

Midweek, our campers traveled to Fanning Springs State Park, where they were warmly welcomed by site host Philip Pitts. It was a day of swimming, fresh air, and meaningful community support.

The Chiefland Fire Department, led by Chief Wallace Taylor, joined us for the day and even sponsored lunch for our entire group, which was a generous gift we’re incredibly thankful for. That same day, Dixie County EMS remained on-site to ensure every camper stayed safe and supported.

Dancing Through the Decades: Totally '80s Night

One of the highlights of the week was Totally '80s Night! It was a colorful, joy-filled evening of neon outfits, scrunchies, retro tunes, and all-out dancing. For many of our campers, it was the first time in a long time they felt completely free. No stares. No judgment. Just pure, lighthearted fun surrounded by friends who get it.

More Than Just Camp: Building a Community of Belonging

While the activities were exciting, the heart of Camp Amigo is something deeper: connection. Many of our campers have felt isolated or misunderstood in their healing journey. Here, they’re surrounded by counselors, volunteers, and fellow survivors who know what it means to face adversity and overcome it.

Whether it was gathering around the table for a meal (huge thanks to Papa Luigi for the incredible pizza), cheering each other on in activities, or staying up late in shared cabins, every moment helped build community, confidence, and lifelong friendships.
